Report on the day trip to Elche for Palm Sunday - 5th April 2009
Over 50 of us enjoyed the splendour of the Palm Sunday procession in Elche. The trip, organised by Jean Laikin, was great fun as well as edifying.
Once again a party enjoyed joining in the famous celebrations of Palm Sunday in Elche - an event which has been held in that city since 1371. This event is of special significance in Elche due to the immense number of blanched palm leaves produced in the city's palm groves and carried through the streets on Palm Sunday.
It is a magnificent sight - a vast sea of white waving palms .This event is so important to Elche the local authority have set up a school specially to teach the art of making the exotic palm shapes. Unfortunately this year the procession was halted prematurely when the heavens opened and people ran for shelter. It didn't stop our party enjoying themselves and after lunch at a local restaurant an impromptu party was held thanks to the presence of two good musicians providing the dance music.
