TRAVEL REPORT

Cirque du Soleil in Valencia – 19th May
Some of us had pre-booked tickets, but most of us turned up early for the afternoon performance, and success, we all managed to get tickets. The show is called Dralion, explained by the fact that the front half of the pantomime horse style character was a lion and the rear half was a dragon. This did not stop these characters performing such extraordinary acrobatic and gymnastic feats that it was difficult to appreciate that there were two people inside each costume. There were trampolinists who would walk up a wall, float, and the highly choreographed routines had them going higher and higher, and interchanging positions – with no mid-air collisions; a juggler who could juggle 5 balls sitting, standing laying, one and two handed; tumblers who looked as though they were made of rubber flying through higher and higher loops; a group doing an amazing skipping routine, with several skipping ropes simultaneously; a breathtaking aerial display by a duo using just a purple sheet suspended from a central point above. A breathtaking display of balancing by a group of femail gymnasts culminating in a three person high balancing act with the bottom girl standing on one tip-toe. Singers, dancers, musicians and what turned out to be not-so-bumbling clowns all complemented the diverse and dynamic performances perfectly. Words do not do justice to the skills of the performers. The whole show was exhilarating, exciting, fast, powerful and strong leaving me feeling both uplifted and exhausted. All in all, well worth seeing.
