REPORT ON THE HOGUERAS AT ALICANTE - June 24th 2005

Did we go on the wrong night? That is the question those members who visited Alicante on Friday for the burning of the Fogueres (Hogueres every where else but Alicante). It was the end of a week of celebrations, processions, floral offerings, dancing and etc but it seemed the Alicantinas had run out of steam and were merely waiting for the chance to set the flame to their fantastic images - just like the Fallas which we know better but prepared for a different Saint. The Fallas are burnt on the Eve of San José; the Hogueres on the eve of San Juan.

The city was certainly lively with open air restaurants doing a glorioous business-( we had eaten in a civilised hotel) but the coffee and brandy on the beach was good while we waited more than 2 hours for our transport home. The story was at 2.0 a.m. that all roads into and out of Alicanye were closed until 3.20 a.m.

Problems had arisen earlier in the evening when two stalwart members of the group found pick pockets had been at work while they were enjoying a free bus ride around the city to view the spectacular sites. However all the group rallied around magnificently. No one went hungry or thirsty. Thank you group.
